Dr Harsh Vardhan, at present Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Government of India, was a practicing ENT surgeon before entering public life in 1993. He was elected to the Delhi Assembly that year from Krishna Nagar constituency in east Delhi and went on to retain that seat in all five elections in 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. In 2014, he contested the Lok Sabha election for the first time and was elected from Chandni Chowk, Delhi.

Fondly called “Doctor Saab” by supporters and opponents alike, Dr Harsh Vardhan is known for disarming simplicity in his personal life and transparency at the work place. When he was Minister in the Delhi government (1993-98), the people found him remarkably accessible and officials respected him for his hands-on style of functioning. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee once said of Dr Harsh Vardhan: “He joined politics with the laudable objective of using his considerable medical knowledge and experience for serving the common man”.

'A Tale of Two Drops' is an interesting and inspiring story about the visionary campaign for polio eradication in Delhi, which became a model for the rest of the country to follow. In fact, it can be adopted as a model for the battle against any widespread disease in the developing world. The book should interest medical professionals, health authorities and non-government organizations engaged in public cause campaigns.

It makes an interesting read on how individuals and organizations in diverse fields – religion, sports, films, art and culture, social service and even politics – were motivated and actively participated in the movement. Innovative and imaginative methods were simultaneously used to achieve quick and effective results.

In brief, it is a guide for policy planners and health workers and offers an insight into a public campaign, which will interest a general reader.

For your convenience, this noteworthy book is published in two languages, in English - 'A Tale of Two Drops' and in Hindi - 'Kahani Do Bundon Ki'. Both the editions were released by Hon'ble Former Prime Minister of India, Sh. Atal Behari Vajpayee in Mavlankar Hall, New Delhi on 7th December, 2004. The books have been published by Prabhat Prakashan, Delhi and Ocean Books Pvt. Ltd. Former Deputy Prime Minister, Sh. LK Advani; Sarkaryavah of RSS, Sh. Mohan Bhagwat and Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Former Health Minister of India were also present on the occasion.
